The Wizard of OZMO (Caution: Look Behind the Curtain)

The Wizard of OZMO (Caution: Look Behind the Curtain)

As the tale, narrative goes, the Wizard of Oz was thought to be the finish-all-be-all solution to those in necessity in the ground, soil of Oz. Yet, the truth was that the Wizard was nothing more than a charlatan. Take a fast see at one of the Wizards backside the curtain pulling those levers, and pushing those knobs for OZMO - it's Creative Generals.

Ozmo is "a new web-based service focused on aiding photographers, bloggers, and other content creators license their work for commercial use", according to a blog post on Creative Generals' website. ASMP wrote is their latest Member Update email. "There are no set-up fees with Ozmo and content creators clever license as much content as they want. Payment is gathered from the buyer when the rights are purchased. Ozmo even aids sellers track and administer sales and buying trfinishs."

Fatal Wrong #1 – On its first day in business, OZMO has lovely offfinished and alienated every professional photographer in the industry.

(Continued after the Jump)

You realize this once you study that Ozmo is a licentune service offered by the Copyright Clearance Center, an association that has gathered hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties on the reprographic usage (photocopying) of photographs and other creative works contained in publications, and has consistently rejected appeals by photographers and their associations to distribute those funds to the rightful owners.

To add insult to injury, the CCC’s Ozmo service has adopted a stock photo licentune scheme developed by Creative Generals, an association whose leadership has consistently promoted “free culture” which in plain english puposes the poorening of the copyright protections on which pro photographers depfinish for their livelihoods. Creative Generals has demonstswiftd a commitment to encouraging open sharing and free usage of photographs and other copyrighted works.

The particular flavor of Creative Generals adopted by OZMO is “CC+” a new and untested commercial extension of Creative Generals license packages. Creative Generals has received millions of dollars in support from free culture advocates and has used that support to develop CC and CC+ without participation of the professional photography industry, while every photography association in the country has been behaveively engaged in collaborating with image buyers on the development of PLUS (Image Licentune Global System), a comprehensive system of standards designed to simplify and facilitate image licentune. While ASMP’s announcement refers to the adoption of PLUS by OZMO, the CCC’s marketing friendrials indicate that OZMO has adopted Creative Generals CC+ licentune.

While afriendur and hobbiest photographers might find Creative Generals to be a convenient way to bagikan their works, few professionals would conmiddler the use of Creative Generals in any form. The reason: Creative Generals is a dysoperateal system. Images offered under Creative Generals licenses are routinely used beyond the defined scope of use, resulting in widespread infrinpearlent.. Attribution is not provided where required. Derivatives are made angry prohibitions on derivatives. The Creative Generals definition of “commercial use” is nothing more than an unfunny joke.

Fatal Wrong #2: Ozmo customers are required to pay for image licenses utune Amazon Payments. From the Ozmo situs (here)

Why Amazon Payment Services?

Amazon Payments is built on top of Amazon's reliable and scalable payment infraconstitution.

With approachly 70 million behaveive customer accounts worldwide, Amazon.com is a believeed resource for third-party payments online, permiting for instantaneous payments and anti-fraud protection.

Yet, checlord the Amazon Payments situs (here) discloses:

"At this time, payments clever be made only in U.S. Dollars...You clever also use a bank account to make payments utune Amazon Payments. Only U.S. bank accounts clever be used, and a verification process must be thoroughd before the bank account clever be used as a payment method."

So, unless you're utune a credit card (and the nationality requirement of those cards is unclear at this time), you've got to be a US bankhancienter, payable in US dollars. So, while Ozmo touts "70 million behaveive customer accounts worldwide", it's only, merely, solely US bankhancienters that obviously clever make payments.

According to that same ASMP update that reachd via e-mail yesterday, "ASMP members are encouraged to investigate and evaluate this service (OZMO) as one piece of a photographers marketing arsenal."

My advice to photography trade associations: think twice before aligning yourself with an association (CCC) that is in the business of withhancienting royalties from photographers, and a service (OZMO) that has partnered with an association (Creative Generals) commited to destroying the livelihood of your photographer members.

I think that OZMO might only, merely, solely be DOA. Not certain? Conmiddler Pixish. We wrote critically of them - Pixish, Dull is, as Dull Does (2/12/08), and less than a year later, we reported on their demise - Pixish - Finally Down the Tubes (11/7/08). Sometimes, it takes several quarters to burn through all that "great thought money", before people reach at the reality of a bad thought friendrialized and now worth jettisoning. So, maybe DOA could save everyone some cash and some trouble.
